Convertibles in Miami
Ocean Drive, the Venetian Causeway and Key Biscayne sunsets were made for a drop-top.
Miami is built for driving with the windows down: causeways over turquoise water, palm-lined boulevards and a skyline that glows at night. Your rental is waiting at Miami International Airport, a quick train ride from the terminals to the rental car center.
From MIA, South Beach is twenty minutes east across the MacArthur Causeway. Wynwood's murals, Little Havana's cafés on Calle Ocho and the design shops of Midtown are all short hops. And when you are ready for the big one, the Overseas Highway starts here: 113 miles of bridges to Key West.
Miami also anchors South Florida road trips — Fort Lauderdale's canals, the Everglades airboat docks and the Gulf Coast are all within a couple of hours. Convertibles and SUVs are the local favorites; book early in winter when half the country flies in to thaw out.
Miami driving has its own rhythm: causeways instead of highways, pastel Art Deco streets in South Beach, and Cuban coffee strong enough to count as a safety feature. Learn the MacArthur, Julia Tuttle and Rickenbacker causeways and the city suddenly makes sense — the Rickenbacker takes you to Key Biscayne's beaches and the Seaquarium, while the MacArthur frames the cruise port and Star Island. Calle Ocho in Little Havana rewards slow driving and stopping for croquetas. Coral Gables hides speed humps on its banyan-shaded avenues, Coconut Grove is the green, sailboat side of the city, and the Design District and Wynwood are gallery-hopping territory where valet lines double as car shows. Summer means sudden downpours and flooded corners in Miami Beach — wait ten minutes and the sun returns.
Pick-up is at the Miami International Airport rental car center. Counters are open daily from 6:00 AM to 11:00 PM local time, and WhatsApp support runs 24/7 if your flight lands late. The MIA Rental Car Center connects to the terminals by the free MIA Mover train; keep the SunPass lane in mind on the Dolphin Expressway (SR-836), which is toll-by-plate its entire length toward the airport. A popular local pick is the Ford Mustang Convertible — see why on its page. Planning a longer stay? Monthly rates apply at this location too.

It is one of America's great drives — 42 bridges over open water. Plan 3.5 to 4 hours each way and stop at Bahia Honda State Park on the way down.
Strongly recommended. Many Miami expressways are toll-by-plate only, and the pass avoids admin fees on every toll road you use.
A convertible is the classic Miami choice for Ocean Drive and the causeways. For families heading to the Everglades, an SUV is the practical pick.
